Veiled Threats by Heidiluxe

After picking your dress, one of the most important aspects of wedding day finery is a veil. The right veil for you should compliment your wedding theme and retell your fashion story. Most bridal ensembles are not complete without a headpiece of some sort. If your wedding theme is a whimsical and fresh party, there is a wedding veil style for you. If you are planning the elegant wedding soiree, there is also veil to complete your look. Wearing a veil is an item that can set your apart from a lovely girl wearing a lovely dress to truly commanding the center of attention as a bride.

There are six general types of veils
   1. Fingertip veil. This is one of the most timeless and popular style of veil. This veil suits many dress styles and body types. It is normally very lightweight and can be worn with various hairstyles. This style often has a blusher attached. A blusher is a short front piece on a veil that goes over the face during a ceremony.

2. Cathedral veil. This veil type is the most dramatic of all veils. It is often paired with a more ornate tiara and worn with the most formal of dresses. Think of Princess Diana (but don’t think of the disastrous demise of her marriage), and her opulent gown; she wore a 25 foot veil.

3. Birdcage/net pouf veil. Brides who choose to wear this style of veil usually have
very structured or sophisticated wedding dress. This style of veil is reminiscent of the
1940s and a more retro style of dressing. Birdcage veils have been making a comeback
in a very big way, so if you are looking for a very “of the moment” wedding style, try
experimenting with this style of veil.

4.       Flyaway veil. A flyaway veil is a shorter, fuller veil that stops below the chin and above the shoulders. It is a very youthful and fun style of veil. It is especially complimentary to a tea length wedding gown or a more casual style of wedding dress or a dress with a bow or other details down the back.
 5.  Mantilla veil. If you are a Latina, or secretly want to be a Latina, this is the veil for you. A mantilla is a very traditional Spanish style veil. It is a very elegant headpiece and it evokes a theatrical mood. It can look best with a lace style dress or a very simple gown.
6.      Waterfall veil/angel cut veil. This is style of veil that frames and highlights the face and has a cascade effect down your back. This works well with dresses that are highly embellished or have a long row of buttons. A dress that is highly structured can be softened with a waterfall veil.
Other important things to note about veils:
1.       Match your whites. It will be very obvious if you have a white veil and an ivory dress.
2.       Don’t be afraid to try on several styles of veils to find what is most complimentary to you. Just like shopping for your gown, it may take a lot of trial and error before you find “the one”. Don’t think that just because you’ve found your dress that any old veil will do.
3.       Keep tiara gemstones and other embellishments all in the same family. If your dress is adorned with pearls, it will often look best if your tiara or veil is trimmed in the same type of stone.
4.       Don’t let your veil become distracting to your wedding day ensemble. When people look at the bride, that’s what they need to see, not piles and piles of extra things making your look weighted down and costumey.
Don’t be afraid to NOT commit. If you’ve tried all sorts of veils or tiaras and you would prefer to not wear one, go for it. You will always look your best if you wear what feels best.

How to Find the Perfect Wedding Dress

I would like to welcome my new guest blogger, the wonderfully witty and fashionista extraordinaire, Heidiluxe, to the Yellow Rose blog. Heidiluxe's fashion background is extensive and over on her blog (www.heidiluxe.blogspot.com) she regularly opines on fashion trends, fashion victims, fashion do's and don'ts and how she wants to get married again someday (same guy, different dress). Heidiluxe has graciously agreed to share some of her clothing/fashion/fit expertise with us and we couldn't be happier to have her. If you've ever wondered how to dress your body or find a fabulous fit, look no further. Take it away Heidiluxe!

How to Pick the Perfect Dress:Shopping for the most important dress of your life can be a dream come true or a nightmare. There are more dress designers and dress options than ever before. How will you know which will be the best dress for you? In order to be able to find the “one” you’ve got to figure out what the “one” means for you. Some women talk about putting a dress on and they just know. Others may not find success so easily. Wedding gowns can be just like finding Mr. Right; trial and error and a few really uncomfortable dates.

The first step is to figure out what you like. Oftentimes what we like is what naturally looks best on us. Go to your closet and try on your favorite dress, or the dress that you get the most compliments on. You may find that there are several details that you like about it that can be a jumping off point for what you are searching for in a wedding gown.

After you have begun establish your dress identity, start looking at dresses. Perhaps you have been doing this for years. Maybe this is your first time you have ever thought about it. Look in magazines, look online, look in boutiques. Have an open mind and do some research. This step of the process is where you can involve your friends and your family. Help them feel included in your quest by showing them your favorites and asking their opinions. Enjoy this part.

When you are ready to take the plunge into trying on dresses, pare down your shopping entourage. Be selective. If you love somebody but don’t like shopping with that somebody, this is not the time to be magnanimous and invite them. Bring only a couple of close friends or family members.

Do not bring “yes” people. Bring people who will be honest, but render good feedback. If you feel like a cow, hearing a member of your entourage mooing isn’t helpful. Helpful critique is not the same as criticism; honest critique will help you, unkind comments will not.

If you chance to encounter a dress slump, don’t be discouraged. Step back from the situation and reevaluate. Ask your sales person for their advice and experience. Being open with your salesperson can be to your advantage. No one wants a happy bride more than the salesperson! They are familiar with the stock and can help guide you to something perhaps you wouldn’t have considered. Try, try again. Trying on something unexpected can refreshen your eyes and sharpen your focus to the task at hand. Also, identifying what you don’t like will help you from trying on the same wrong thing over and over.

And finally, when you find the dress that makes you feel like Mrs. Right, order it. Dresses are often made after ordering and can take several weeks or months to be shipped and you will need to have as much time as possible for alterations and fittings. Proper alterations can make a beautiful dress extraordinary when it is precisely fitted just for your body. Then, once your gown is ordered, you can start thinking about your bridesmaid’s dresses!

Gloria Dress 2010

I was so pleased with last year's recipient of the Gloria Dress that I seriously considered working with the same high school to find another deserving junior or senior for this award. However, after I became aware of Jeanie's story, I knew she would be a fitting recipient of the Gloria Dress. Jeanie and her family have faced a difficult year but Jeanie continues to smile and be a good example for her family and her peers. Here is her story, in her own words:I am truly thankful that The Yellow Rose chose me for this scholarship. I am grateful to have heard the inspiring story of Mrs. Kilgore's sister, who overcame her own tribulations and continued even when the going got tough. Hearing Gloria's story made me reminisce on this past year and the very hard experiences I've gone through with my youngest brother. Gloria's story has shown me that it's possible to succeed at anything when you set your mind and heart to it.

My youngest sibling, Jason, almost died last year in a pool accident. He fell into the water when no one else was looking. My family and I found him face down in the water. We pulled him out and because I had recently learned CPR at my church's girls camp, I tried to perform it on Jason to the best of my abilities. Thankfully I managed to get a slight pulse back. Jason was taken to the hospital where he was in a coma for a few weeks. It took some time and many prayers, but he eventually recovered fully. This has been one of the hardest experiences of my life and it has reinforced my testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ immensely. I thank my Heavenly Father for the tremendous miracle that he allowed in not only my family’s life, but the lives of many others.

I come from a modest Honduran family and I am grateful for the blessing of living in this country and the many opportunities I have for gaining an education. I currently have a 4.0 GPA and I’m involved in various extracurricular activities such as playing soccer for the Junior Varsity team at South Gwinnett High School. This past soccer season I received the Coach’s award for being the player who most exhibited a positive attitude and always pushed to do her best. I’m also in Beta Club and S.L.E.D (Student Leadership Ethics Development) and these clubs have taught me a lot about how to be a leader and how to make the community a better place. In addition to my academic classes, I also attend early-morning church seminary and it is my favorite part of the day. I love being able to start off my day with a spiritual uplift. I’ve been taught by my parents that having an education is extremely important and I work hard to achieve my academic goals. After I graduate high school I hope to continue my education at Brigham Young University.

A "Bliss" ful Time

I have been eagerly anticipating the arrival of the spring issue of Bliss Magazine because I knew that one of my bridal customers was going to be featured. Not only had I spoken with my customer, Becca, about submitting her engagement story and bridal photos, but I had also been coordinating with the editor of Bliss Magazine.
While I knew I would be excited to see my client and my dress in print, I did not anticipate how completely and totally thrilled I've been to actually see the pictures in the magazine. I have not stopped smiling. I immediately started calling friends and family and told each of them how fantastic it felt to see one of my customers in a stunning modest gown from the Yellow Rose.
Both Becca and the dress are gorgeous.
Thank you to both Susan and Melissa from Bliss Magazine for doing an outstanding job! I am already looking forward to the next issue.

Northeast Georgia Bridal Show - March 20, 2010

Planning a wedding can be stressful. Whether deciding between dresses, reception sites, food, invitations, or cakes, it can be mentally exhausting to plan all the minute details that a wedding entails. For those brides-to-be who are looking for a helping hand, there is one event in which attendance is a must: the Northeast Georgia Bridal Show. On Saturday, March 20th, 201o the Georgia Mountain Center in Gainesville, Georgia will host the bridal show from noon until 5 p.m. Wedding services will include wedding planners, formal wear, reception sites, honeymoon travel and everything else to help brides plan their very special day.

I am particularly excited because The Yellow Rose will be providing the dresses for the fashion show. Stephanie, coordinator for the Northeast Georgia Bridal Show, contacted me about providing dresses because she wants brides to know that there are modest options for a bride's wedding dress. This will be a great opportunity for me to not only showcase my gowns, but also to allow more people to see that a modest wedding gown can be both elegant and fashionable. Please make plans to attend now. If you would like more information about the Northeast Georgia Bridal Show go to their website at www.bridalshowextravaganza.com

Customer Appreciation

While driving the other day I noticed a sign outside a particular business, "Thanks for a record year." As I thought about that sign, I thought about how that business really appreciates their customers. In turn, I thought about how I needed to appreciate my customers because I think my customers are the greatest. Being in the retail business, I know the value of having satisfied customers and how important they are for a business to be successful. I have had the privilege of meeting so many wonderful people through The Yellow Rose. I cannot express the excitement and joy that I feel when I see a beautiful woman in a modest gown. I am so grateful for the opportunity I have to promote modesty in a stylish and fashionable way. I applaud all of you women who have come to The Yellow Rose looking for a modest dress. I know some of you have driven several hours and I am very appreciative.

I look forward to 2010 and to meeting more women who share my passion for modesty.
